The White House states additional cuts breach the previous budget agreement.
The White House announced President Joe Biden “strongly opposes” legislation that proposes large military and veteran spending cuts in 2024, pledging that the president would veto the legislation if it made it to his desk.
“The Administration strongly opposes House passage of H.R. 4366, making appropriations for military construction, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and related agencies for the fiscal year (FY) ending September 30, 2024 and for other purposes,” the White House stated. “If the President were presented with H.R. 4366, he would veto it.”
President Biden and Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy brokered a spending deal earlier this year that allowed for the full passage of the 2024 budget. The White House claimed that current legislation seeking to cut spending back further shows that Speaker McCarthy is going back on his previous agreement.
